During this time the ruling East India Company did set up a Coal Committee with the purpose of studying and exploring coal availability in eastern part of India. Though in one of its report the Coal Committee first mentioned the phrase- Geological Survey of India around 1848, but it took almost three years more for official implementation of the name.
