Under the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies (MAKAIAS) is an autonomous body. This institute was established in the year 1993 through joint initiative of the Government of West Bengal and Department of Culture, Ministry of Human Resource & Development (Government of India). Main ob objectives of this institution include:

• Focus on social, cultural, economic, political and administrative developments in Asia since middle of the 19th century
• Special focus on life and works of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad
